It is never too late to achieve educational goals. This philosophy is embodied by 45-year-old Sereana Korovulavula, who is currently pursuing her studies alongside her peers in the Matua Programme at Nabua Secondary School.
Yesterday, Ms. Korovulavula was one of the 9,088 Year 13 students across the nation who sat for their external examinations. Her determination to succeed despite her age is fueled by the support of her family, who stand behind her as she navigates through this academic journey.
“It has never been easy, but I know it will be worth it,” she expressed confidently. Joining the Matua programme last year, she successfully completed Year 12 and is optimistic about finishing Year 13 as well.
Originating from Nabudrau Village in Rewa, Ms. Korovulavula is a dedicated mother of six. She balances her responsibilities as a stay-at-home parent to her youngest child, who is only three, with her educational aspirations. “My husband provides for our family as a mechanic, and my eldest, who is a flight attendant, also supports us,” she said.
The family’s relocation to Suva in Tamavua followed the first wave of COVID-19, as her husband sought employment opportunities. Despite financial constraints, resulting from costs associated with bus travel and daily living expenses, Ms. Korovulavula remains resolute. With her husband as the sole income earner, she feels a strong desire to contribute to her family’s well-being.
“My children are my greatest inspiration,” she noted, citing their needs as a motivating factor in her quest for a better future. She aims to pursue studies in human resources and finance at the university level upon completing her current program.
Grateful for the opportunities presented through the Matua programme, Ms. Korovulavula encourages others who may have dropped out of school to overcome their doubts and pursue their dreams. She emphasizes the valuable support from dedicated teachers, like Mr. Lingham, who have been instrumental in her learning journey.
This story reflects not only a personal victory but also serves as an inspiring message for those considering a return to education at any stage of life. It highlights the importance of perseverance and the strength of familial support in overcoming obstacles to achieve one’s aspirations.
In a world where education is a crucial determinant of success, Ms. Korovulavula’s journey exemplifies that with determination and support, it’s never too late to chase one’s dreams.
