Destruction Plans for Massive Drug Haul Under Discussion

Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has announced that discussions are ongoing regarding the “sequence of process” for the destruction of 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine currently held by the police. This significant drug haul was seized in January 2024, and last month, the High Court in Lautoka granted approval for its destruction.

Mr. Fong Chew emphasized that the planning process will determine the how and where of the destruction. He stated, “Once we have the concurrence of the ODPP (Director of Public Prosecutions) and endorsement from the court, we will be able to provide details regarding the timing and location of the destruction.”

The Lautoka High Court has set a trial date for April 2025 and deemed it unnecessary and impractical to transport such a large consignment of drugs from Nasinu to Lautoka for presentation as evidence during that trial. Furthermore, the court has issued stringent orders for the destruction process, which includes requirements to document the operation via video, to be submitted to the court.

This announcement underlines the legal and procedural diligence involved in handling large drug seizures while ensuring adherence to the court’s directives. As authorities work meticulously through this process, it reflects their commitment to maintaining public safety and upholding the rule of law. The eventual destruction of these drugs could serve as a proactive step toward combating drug-related crime in the region.

This situation illustrates the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in dealing with drug trafficking, but it also highlights the rigorous legal framework designed to address such issues responsibly and effectively.
