Residents of Lekutulevu Village in Cakaudrove have faced significant challenges as they have had to rely on a nearby river for essential activities such as cooking, washing, and sanitation. The village headman, Josefa Biraki, highlighted the dire situation, mentioning that the community had no alternative but to use this contaminated water source, which has resulted in numerous health issues for locals.

“Many individuals have fallen ill due to drinking from the polluted river,” Mr. Biraki stated. He expressed frustration over the lack of response from the government despite their ongoing requests for proper sanitation and access to clean drinking water.

“This issue has persisted for many years, and we are not alone; many other villages are grappling with similar challenges,” he remarked. However, there’s a glimmer of hope as the community recently received safe drinking water and improved sanitation facilities, thanks to the efforts of Rotary Pacific Water.

“It’s a blessing we have been praying for,” Mr. Biraki noted gratefully. Divisional planning officer Setareki Dakuiboca praised the NGO’s initiatives, stating, “These developments have made life significantly easier for women, children, the elderly, and individuals living with disabilities.”

In summary, while the residents of Lekutulevu Village have endured hardships due to a lack of clean water, recent efforts from NGOs bring newfound hope and relief to the community, emphasizing the positive impact that access to safe water can have on everyday life. There is a clear opportunity for continued support and improvement in public health and quality of life for many affected villagers.
