South Sea Towage Limited (SSTL) has initiated preparatory activities and has formalized a Memorandum of Understanding with Pacific Marine Group to address the issue of derelict ships cluttering Suva Harbour.

Unit Trust of Fiji holds a 60 percent stake in SSTL. UTOF General Manager Sakiusa Bolaira indicated that discussions are ongoing to ensure that the removal work begins no later than January 2025. Bolaira highlighted that the initiative aims to remove approximately 80 grounded vessels in the harbour, emphasizing the need for rehabilitation of Suva’s waters.

He shared that the current state of the harbour is concerning and detrimental, as it hampers larger vessels from docking due to the hazards presented by the abandoned ships. The collaboration involves working closely with Fiji Ports Corporation and the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji.

SSTL Chairperson Himmat Lodhia stated that the signing of this agreement reflects a joint commitment to clearing derelict ships and debris from Suva Harbour, with plans to extend similar efforts to other locations across Fiji. He noted that the topic has long been a matter of conversation among leaders, but SSTL, along with Pacific Marine Group, is positioned to take decisive action.

Additionally, Lodhia announced plans to expand operations to the Solomon Islands in November, following existing services in Vanuatu and Nauru. He expressed optimism that this MOU signing represents a promising step forward, not just for the companies involved but for Fiji in general, as it positions them as champions of climate and environmental stewardship.

Andrew Morris, representing Pacific Marine Business Development – South Pacific, affirmed that Pacific Marine Group is a leader in marine contracting and commercial diving. He detailed the services provided, which include marine construction, demolition, dredging, tugging, barge services, and various diving operations, all performed in compliance with applicable laws and high standards of professionalism.

Furthermore, SSTL maintains a reviewable term contract with Fiji Ports Corporation Ltd, granting it exclusive rights to manage all movements and related services within designated ports, including Suva, Lautoka, Malau, and Warik.
