Dental Prosthetics on the Move: What’s Next for CWM?

The Ministry of Health is exploring options to move dental prosthetic services from Nakasi Health Centre back to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWM). During a recent parliamentary session, Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu explained that the services were initially relocated to Nakasi by the previous government due to space limitations at CWM.

“This was meant to be a temporary solution until a suitable space is identified at CWM,” Dr. Lalabalavu remarked. He outlined two potential options for the relocation. The first involves utilizing the School of Dentistry and Oral Health at the Fiji National University, specifically the JB Savou Dental Clinic, which is currently used for clinical studies but could accommodate the prosthetic team.

The second option is to convert the former FNBC office, which would require renovations to transform it into a prosthetic clinic and lab for dental officers and staff currently stationed there. Additionally, the ministry is considering decentralizing dental services to sub-divisional hospitals, particularly in Savusavu, where local dental officers are adept in providing prosthetic services but lack adequate workspace.

Dr. Lalabalavu emphasized the need for a conducive work environment for these professionals to perform their services effectively.
