Dental Care’s New Frontiers: Insights from Fiji’s 30th Conference

The 30th Fiji Oral Health Association Conference underscored the rising necessity for healthcare services in response to ongoing challenges stemming from the COVID pandemic, recent disease outbreaks, and oral health issues.

Dr. Luisa Cikamatana, the Chief Medical Advisor, pointed out that poor dietary habits and the impacts of climate change have negatively affected the health of Pacific communities.

According to the Global Burden of Disease Study conducted in 2019, approximately 3.5 billion individuals worldwide are affected by oral diseases, with excessive sugar intake contributing to diabetes, obesity, and dental problems.

Dr. Cikamatana highlighted the government’s dedication to tackling Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) through a multi-faceted strategy.

The upcoming 2024-2025 budget emphasizes community outreach, acknowledging the crucial role of dental professionals in responding to pandemics and preparing for future health challenges.

Dr. Mehar Ali, the Association President, encouraged dentists to pursue ongoing education, as advancements in the field of dentistry are continuous.

She noted that the conference serves as an opportunity for practitioners to exchange the latest innovations and industry trends.

The theme for this year, ‘Cultivating Connections, Communications, and Collaborations,’ signifies the significance of teamwork within the dental profession.
