Maintenance dredging at Denarau Marina channel is overdue, according to Port Denarau Marina CEO Cynthia Rasch. She expressed gratitude for the government’s allocation of $5.5 million for dredging works aimed at mitigating flooding and strengthening infrastructure, which is essential for the tourism economy.
The last dredging of the Denarau Marina channel occurred in 2012, and the topic has been under discussion with the Ministry of Tourism and Waterways since then. Rasch emphasized the marina’s commitment to remaining a safe and accessible hub for vessels, which is vital for supporting tourism, a critical component of Fiji’s economy.
Port Denarau Marina is currently awaiting the final approval of its dredging license from the Solicitor General’s office. Rasch mentioned plans to enhance facilities once the license is granted and promised a press release outlining future developments.
Meanwhile, Minister for Rural & Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, indicated that the dredging project is still under review. He acknowledged the allocation of funds and noted the importance of supporting the tourism sector. Ditoka stated that the dredging would facilitate vessel access and help alleviate flooding issues in the Nadi area.
He mentioned ongoing issues with flooding in locations like Yavusania Village due to soil erosion and highlighted additional plans to address these problems alongside river dredging. Ditoka confirmed plans to dredge the Nadi Riverbank near Malolo while emphasizing the need for careful execution to avoid unintended consequences, such as saltwater intrusion.
