Maintenance dredging at Denarau Marina channel is overdue, according to Cynthia Rasch, the chief executive officer of Port Denarau Marina. She expressed appreciation for the government’s funding allocation, which was confirmed by Finance Minister Biman Prasad during the recent parliamentary session. The allocation of $5.5 million for dredging works aims to mitigate flooding and strengthen the infrastructure at Denarau, which is vital for the tourism economy.
The last dredging of the Denarau Marina channel occurred in 2012, leading to ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Tourism and Waterways. Rasch emphasized that Port Denarau Marina supports this development to ensure the marina remains a safe and accessible hub for vessels, critical for the tourism sector, a key component of the Fijian economy.
The marina is currently awaiting final approval for its dredging license from the Solicitor General’s office. Rasch mentioned they are exploring ways to enhance the facility, intending to release plans once the license is approved.
Meanwhile, Minister for Rural & Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, stated that the project is still under consideration. He noted that studies are ongoing to determine the specifics of the dredging but appreciated the fund allocation, which will benefit the tourism sector.
Ditoka highlighted that dredging would allow certain classes of vessels direct access to their berths, thus fulfilling their customer commitments. He also pointed out that the dredging could help alleviate flooding issues, particularly in the Nadi area, which has faced challenges like soil erosion and recurring floods.
Additionally, Ditoka confirmed plans to dredge the Nadi Riverbank adjacent to Malolo. He noted the importance of careful dredging practices to prevent saltwater intrusion, emphasizing the need for studies to ensure the dredging beneficially addresses the issues without creating new problems.
