Denarau Island’s Water Sanitation: A $15 Million Upgrade in the Works!

Improving the water sanitation services on Denarau Island is a major focus for the government this financial year. Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, emphasized the significance of Denarau for both the tourism sector and the national economy.

He noted that the existing wastewater and water infrastructure was established in the 1970s, initially serving only one hotel, the Regent of Fiji Hotel. Currently, Denarau is home to nine resorts comprising over 2,000 rooms, as well as additional amenities such as a water park, golf courses, residential areas, and a marina featuring shopping and dining options.

With ongoing hotel developments and substantial plans in progress, the government has allocated up to $15 million for upgrades, which may include cost-sharing for the Denarau Island Infrastructure Design or Build Upgrade Works now in the tender phase.

This project aims to upgrade and replace existing sewer pump stations, renovation of sewer rising mains, sewer reticulation, and the installation of new water mains.
