Demand Surges for Satellite Internet in Fiji

Fiji’s first authorized reseller of Starlink’s satellite broadband internet has been inundated with inquiries from the public, leading to the pre-sale of 60 percent of its initial shipment of 600 units before they have even arrived.

Lightspeed Fiji Pte Ltd received its license from Starlink to resell its broadband satellite internet service just last week. The unexpected high demand might prompt them to place another order soon.

Company director Richard Broadbridge noted significant interest from rural areas of Fiji.

“The key goal for us is to provide internet access to rural areas. We’ve received numerous inquiries from Lau, Kadavu, and the outer islands, with our Facebook page being flooded with requests,” said Mr. Broadbridge.

“While there is mobile coverage in rural areas, many people are seeking faster internet. The demand for better internet services has evolved beyond what a 3G service can provide. About 600 units are expected to arrive in four to six weeks, and 60 percent of them are already pre-sold.”

“There is substantial interest in Starlink’s internet. Our schedule has been packed with meetings with government agencies, tourism organizations, and individuals.”

Mr. Broadbridge mentioned that the company is authorized to sell only to businesses and maritime vessels. “From our initial stock, we have 20 antennas for ships, and as of yesterday morning, there is only one left. The units are selling rapidly, and we are close to needing to order more stock soon.”

“We are very pleased with the response. It gives Starlink great confidence in Fiji,” added Mr. Broadbridge.
