Demand Boom for Satellite Internet in Fiji

Fiji’s first authorized reseller of Starlink’s satellite broadband Internet, Lightspeed Fiji Pte Ltd, reported a significant surge in public interest. They have already pre-sold 60 percent of their initial shipment of 600 units before they have even arrived.

Just last week, Lightspeed Fiji was granted their license to resell Starlink’s satellite internet service. The overwhelming demand has been so high that they may soon need to place a second order for more units.

Company director Richard Broadbridge stated that much of the interest is coming from rural areas of Fiji. “The most important thing for us is getting internet to rural areas, and we’ve been getting a lot of enquiries from Lau, Kadavu, and the outer islands. Enquiries are just pouring in through our Facebook page,” Broadbridge said.

He explained many rural residents, who already have mobile coverage, are seeking faster internet services. “People’s requirements are changing, and a 3G service is just no longer acceptable for a lot of rural folk.”

The initial stock of 600 units is expected to arrive in about four to six weeks, with 60 percent already sold. The interest in Starlink’s internet has led to a busy schedule filled with meetings with government agencies, tourism organizations, and individuals.

Broadbridge added that the company is currently authorized to resell only to businesses and maritime sectors, including ships. “In our initial stock, we have 20 antennas for ships, and as of this morning, only one remains. So, it’s selling very quickly, and we are almost at the point of needing to place another order very soon.”

He expressed satisfaction with the uptake, noting that it provides Starlink with significant confidence in the Fijian market.
