“Delay regretted for new Information Act by Attorney-General”

Attorney-General Graham Leung has described the delay in implementing the Information Act as unfortunate.

Speaking in Parliament, Leung expressed his intention to approach the Cabinet promptly to seek support for the Act, which was initially passed in 2018.

“Public access to government-held information is important. It allows individuals to better understand the role of government and the decisions being made on their behalf,” Leung stated.

He emphasized that informed citizens can hold the government accountable for its actions and policies. Once the Act is enforced, it will enhance access to information, benefiting people’s lives by providing details related to education, healthcare, and other public services.

Leung further highlighted that the right to know is crucial for upholding other basic human rights and for promoting transparency, justice, and development. “It underpins and strengthens democracy,” he added.
