Alumeci Koroitamana is the mother of 12-year-old James Taito, who was diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma, a rare type of cancer, at just four years old. Today, James is back to enjoying life, attending school, playing rugby, and spending time with friends.
Ms. Koroitamana attributes their perseverance through this challenging period to God’s grace, the support of medical professionals, and the assistance provided by WOWS Kids Fiji. “With the immense support from family and the prayers of many, my child survived one of the rarest forms of cancer,” Ms. Koroitamana expressed.
The diagnosis was a devastating shock to the Koroitamana family. “It took doctors two months to determine the cause of James’s illness,” she recalled. It was only when a visiting doctor from overseas examined him that they identified it as Burkitt lymphoma. James was admitted to CWM Hospital and spent two months there undergoing tests before eventually requiring surgery and chemotherapy.
Ms. Koroitamana explained that there was significant swelling in James’s large intestine, which was surgically removed. However, by that time, the cancer had begun to spread to other parts of his intestine, prompting the decision to start chemotherapy. “It was incredibly difficult for us, but we held on to our faith,” she said.
As time passed, there were certainly moments of doubt regarding the medical treatment, with the stress of hospital visits, the high cost of medications, and negative comments from others weighing heavily on them. “I am thankful to the doctors for their diligent care, but the support we received made a huge difference,” she added.
Now, James is a healthy 12-year-old who attends Navuakece District School and enjoys playing rugby with his peers. “We are also grateful for WOWS Kids Fiji, who supported us during our time of need,” Ms. Koroitamana remarked.
WOWS Kids Fiji provided the family with recharge cards, food vouchers during James’s hospital stay, transportation fare from their home in Lomaivuna, Naitasiri, and assistance for his medications. “We are incredibly thankful to them and the doctors; without their help, my child might not be here today,” she declared.
