The Fiji Sports Council is currently running its third week of an athletics camp aimed at equipping young athletes for major upcoming competitions, including the Coca-Cola Games and the National Primary Athletics meet. Eugene Vollmer, a former elite triple jumper and assistant coach at the camp, emphasizes that while access to training and facilities is crucial, the real key to success lies in the commitment and dedication of the athletes themselves.
Vollmer stated, “It all comes down to the athletes. We can have all the contracts, facilities, and talented individuals, but if they aren’t dedicated to putting in the effort and attending practice consistently, especially when faced with challenges, they won’t succeed.” The camp focuses on teaching essential athletic techniques such as effective running, jumping, and pacing, which are particularly important for novices tackling events like the triple jump for the first time.
Despite the technical training provided, Vollmer highlights that the hunger to succeed is what truly differentiates exceptional athletes. He also advocates for the role of coaches in fostering a love for the sport among young athletes. “We need to create a platform where it’s attractive for athletes to love the sport or take it to the next level,” he commented.
Importantly, the Fiji Sports Council camp not only prepares young athletes for competitive events but also aims to instill a sense of discipline and commitment that will benefit them in all areas of life.
In summary, while the camp provides valuable resources and expert coaching, the ultimate determinant of success remains the athletes’ dedication and passion for their sport. By fostering both athletic skills and essential life attributes, the camp opens the door for personal growth and future achievements.
This initiative highlights the importance of perseverance and the nurturing of commitment in young athletes, not just in sports but in their overall life journey, promising a positive outcome for Fiji’s future sports talent.
