Decoding Boxer Purse Demands: Behind the Championship Fight Bid

A boxer must provide justification for requesting a large purse in a championship fight. The Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) has established a minimum purse of $2000 for such events.

Chairman Adi Narayan stated that the BCF is open to negotiating demands higher than what promoters initially offer. This approach was implemented after concerns arose about boxers requesting between $7000 and $8000 per fight.

“We don’t want to dictate the boxer’s purse. We have set a minimum purse of $2000 for a championship fight,” said Narayan. He added that while the BCF has the authority to influence the boxer’s purse, it prefers facilitating negotiations.

Narayan mentioned that if a boxer refuses to sign due to purse issues, a discussion involving the boxer, manager, and promoter will take place. “We will sit and talk to justify their demand for the dollars they are asking, and we will come to a settlement. We have powers but are trying to negotiate, and if a boxer is worth that much, they need to prove it to us. If they don’t justify, then the hammer will come down,” he said.
