A recent photograph showcasing the deteriorating state of a notable primary school on the outskirts of Suva has raised significant concerns. The extent of neglect and decay is shocking, reflecting a troubling transformation in the educational environment.
In the past, schools were regarded as sacred places of learning, deserving of deep respect from both students and staff. Students would arrive with friendly greetings like “Good morning, Sir” or “Good morning, Madam,” and laughter would fill the air as they gathered to start their day. This culture promoted cooperation and a sense of pride in maintaining the school environment, with dedicated efforts from students, prefects, and staff to keep facilities clean and vibrant.
Children were instilled with essential values—practicing good manners, maintaining hygiene, and respecting school property. This foundation fostered not only academic skills but also character development, producing well-rounded individuals who contributed positively to society.
However, the current educational landscape appears drastically different. The emphasis on discipline and respect seems diminished, with reports indicating that rules surrounding behavior are less enforced. The removal of key support roles like school counselors and religious educators has left teachers feeling powerless, leading to a wave of resignations and migration in search of better opportunities.
The autonomy of school management has been compromised, with decisions being predominantly dictated by the Ministry of Education. While funding and salaries are crucial, this lack of local governance has contributed to a significant decline in the educational framework, neglecting the infrastructure used by around 900 students in the institution.
It is critical to reflect on whether current practices are genuinely benefiting the children. Issues such as drug trafficking in schools, teenage pregnancies, and disrespect for authority figures must be addressed. It is essential to reclaim schools as sanctuaries of learning where values are nurtured and respected.
In light of these challenges, there remains hope for revitalization within the education system. Engaging the community, revitalizing school governance, and empowering teachers and administrators can help restore the dignity and respect that schools once commanded. By working collaboratively, stakeholders can ensure that schools transform from neglected spaces back into cherished temples of learning.
