After 24 years of waiting for closure, the family of Lance Corporal Simione Rawaileba has finally begun the healing process following a reconciliation event involving former members of the Counter Revolutionary Warfare Unit (CRWU) and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF). This event was held to address the painful legacy left by the 2000 mutiny, during which LCPL Rawaileba lost his life.

Salanieta Rawaileba shared her heartache, explaining how each commemorative occasion serves as a painful reminder of her husband’s absence. She expressed hope and relief at finally receiving an apology, stating that acknowledgment of past wrongs has a profound effect on the healing journey. Ms. Rawaileba emphasized that the recognition of mistakes is essential for moving forward from tragedy.

Accompanied by her son Mulase, who is now serving in the military himself, she reflected on the long road to this moment. As a child at the time of his father’s death, Mulase shared the emotional challenge of processing such a significant loss while affirming the importance of forgiveness in the reconciliation process.

The initiation of this reconciliation program by the Government and the RFMF Commander has sparked a wave of hope for other families affected by the conflict, illustrating that healing is possible when open dialogue and acknowledgment take place.

This event underscores a hopeful dedication to healing and reconciliation, signaling a positive step towards mending relationships and memories impacted by past violence.

In summary, the Rawaileba family’s journey highlights the transformative power of acknowledgment and forgiveness, ultimately serving as a reminder of the importance of facing the past to pave the way for future peace.
