Prince Charles Park in Nadi is expected to be renamed King Charles Park, but it was originally called AD Patel Stadium. This point was raised by Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya during a parliamentary debate on the Nadi Town Council’s annual report on Monday.
Koya expressed concern that the original name has been overlooked, stating, “There is one thing that is forgotten… the actual stadium was named AD Patel Stadium.” He noted that he has not observed the name being used during his travels in and out of Nadi, indicating that it seems to have been removed.
He emphasized the importance of retaining the name associated with a significant figure in Fiji’s history. “It would not be an honourable thing if we removed the name and did not put it back on to the stadium,” he said. Koya urged officials to investigate the matter, expressing hope that the name AD Patel Stadium would be restored.
Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa acknowledged the need to rename the park to King Charles Park due to the recent changes in the monarchy. He mentioned that the council has reached out to the British High Commission for protocol confirmation regarding the name change.
