Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has announced that authorities are currently in discussions regarding the procedures for the destruction of 4.15 tonnes of methamphetamine that has been seized by the police. The drugs, which were confiscated in January 2024, received approval for destruction from the High Court in Lautoka last month.
Mr. Fong Chew highlighted that plans are still being finalized, including the time and location for the destruction process, contingent on agreements with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) and further court endorsements. He stated that once these details are confirmed, authorities will share the relevant information about when and where the destruction will take place.
The High Court in Lautoka has scheduled a trial date for April 2025, ruling that transporting such a large quantity of drugs from Nasinu to Lautoka as evidence is impractical. Consequently, the court has mandated that the destruction be conducted under specific conditions, which include documenting the entire process on video for submission to the court.
This announcement reflects a strong commitment from law enforcement to adhere to legal procedures while also ensuring the safe disposal of dangerous substances. It is a positive step toward addressing drug-related issues in the community, showing that authorities are taking rigorous actions against drug trafficking and working to maintain public safety.
In summary, the ongoing discussions indicate a thorough approach to an essential aspect of drug seizure and destruction, reinforcing the justice system’s role in combating illegal drug activities.
