The i-Taukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) is urging its tenants to settle any outstanding rental arrears in accordance with their lease agreements. A grace period of 30 days, which ends on November 30, has already been established to facilitate this process.
In its statement, TLTB announced that its Estates Teams across all Regional and Sub-Regional Offices—including those in Suva, Sigatoka, Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Rakiraki, Korovou, Nausori, Labasa, and Savusavu—will be conducting follow-up visits to tenants who are behind on their payments. These visits aim to evaluate the steps tenants are taking to settle their overdue rent.
Previously, TLTB had issued notices and reminders regarding rental arrears, underscoring the importance of compliance to maintain the validity of their leases. To assist tenants facing financial difficulties, TLTB has collaborated with commercial banks to offer financial assistance options.
TLTB emphasized the significance of tenant cooperation to ensure timely disbursement of lease payments to landowners, who rely on these funds for their livelihoods. The end of the grace period on November 30 could trigger enforcement actions, including the potential repossession of the land. Therefore, tenants are encouraged to take advantage of this period to clear their debts and avert possible repercussions.
The statement concludes with a call for genuine commitment from tenants to meet their lease obligations and preserve their agreements, highlighting the necessity for landowners to receive their rightful income.
This situation presents a valuable opportunity for tenants, as the TLTB’s collaboration with banks could pave the way for financial solutions that benefit both landlords and tenants. By addressing this matter proactively, tenants can secure their leasing arrangements and support the livelihoods of landowners, fostering a collaborative community spirit.
