Five individuals narrowly escaped significant injury following a motor vehicle accident in Saqani early this morning. According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana, the driver of the vehicle is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident.
The accident occurred in Delaivatu shortly after 2 a.m. Reports indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road. While one of the four passengers was taken to Savusavu Hospital, the remaining occupants received treatment and were subsequently discharged.
SSP Divuana emphasized that driving under the influence is a major danger to all road users and urged motorists to heed warnings about the severe consequences of such actions. Since the beginning of the year until mid-November, a total of 272 drivers have been arrested for driving while intoxicated, highlighting the ongoing risks posed by impaired driving.
As the festive season approaches, the Director of Traffic is appealing to both drivers and pedestrians to change their attitudes towards road safety. He stressed the importance of making responsible choices, particularly during celebrations that often involve alcohol. “Choosing to drink and drive, or to overindulge, significantly impairs your ability to react and make sound decisions, ultimately jeopardizing lives,” he said.
The Director’s call to action serves as a reminder of our shared responsibility for road safety. By adopting prudent practices, we can collectively work towards preventing further tragedies and ensuring a safer holiday season for everyone.
This article highlights a crucial message about the importance of road safety, especially during times of celebration. As we approach the holidays, it’s essential for individuals to remember the potential consequences of their choices on the road and to prioritize safety for themselves and others. An increased public awareness campaign during this period could greatly benefit the community and reduce accidents related to impaired driving.
