As the festive season approaches, the National Fire Authority (NFA) has raised alarms about the increase in structural fires. From January to September of this year, reports indicate that there were 152 structural fires, resulting in approximately $20.2 million in damages.
In a statement made yesterday, NFA CEO Puamau Sowane highlighted the leading causes of these fires over the past five years, with electrical faults being the most frequent. Other significant causes include arson and unattended cooking.
With many Fijians preparing for Diwali, Sowane urges the community to be vigilant when using fire-related items. He cautions, “As we get ready for the festival of lights, please exercise caution when using fire. Do not leave cooking unattended and use firecrackers responsibly.”
Sowane reassured the public that NFA water trucks are fully prepared to respond to any emergencies that may arise. “If there’s a fire and the need arises, our fire trucks are ready to step in to help,” he stated.
This message serves as a crucial reminder for safety during a festive time that celebrates brightness and joy. With careful preparation and awareness, the community can enjoy the upcoming celebrations while minimizing the risk of fire-related incidents.
By promoting responsible use of fire and being proactive, the public can ensure a safer environment for everyone to enjoy the festivities.
