The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has announced that a new lift for the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) is set to arrive next month, aiming to resolve ongoing issues with the current non-functional patient lift. This announcement follows public outcry on social media regarding the prolonged dysfunction of the lift at the hospital.
In a statement, the Ministry explained that the lift, located in the West Wing, has been out of service for an extended period, significantly disrupting patient care. The malfunctioning lift, which is over 15 years old and was sourced from the OTIS Elevator Company in New Zealand, has prompted engineers from the company to be onsite to assist with restoration efforts. Meanwhile, the Ministry continues to collaborate with various agencies including the Ministry of Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services to tackle the matter.
Recognizing the need for an upgrade, the Ministry highlighted that in 2023, plans were set in motion to replace the outdated lifts at CWMH. With government-approved funding, they are actively engaged in the procurement process to provide new lifts that are expected to be delivered by February 2025. These new lifts are not only essential for transporting patients but are also designed to accommodate staff and medical equipment while adhering to strict infection control standards.
The Ministry expressed understanding regarding the frustrations arising from the lift’s failure, which has impacted patient care, and reassured patients, their families, and hospital staff that efforts are ongoing to enhance the hospital’s infrastructure. They urged the public to remain patient while improvements are being put in place to ensure better healthcare delivery throughout the country.
In summary, the commitment to upgrading the lifts at CWMH reflects the Ministry’s dedication to improving healthcare facilities and patient care in the region, promising a more efficient service in the near future.
This effort not only addresses a critical logistical issue but also demonstrates a broader commitment to maintaining high health standards at the hospital, ultimately contributing to improved patient outcomes and satisfaction.
