The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has confirmed that a new lift for the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) is set to arrive next month. This development comes in response to ongoing concerns regarding the dysfunctional patient lift at the facility, which has been out of service for some time.
Public outcry was evident on social media, where many sought clarity on the prolonged lack of lift functionality. In a statement, the ministry addressed these concerns, noting that the lift in the West Wing of CWMH has indeed been non-operational, disrupting patient care.
The current lift, which is over 15 years old, was installed by the OTIS Elevator Company from New Zealand. Maintenance engineers from the company are on-site to attempt repairs while the Ministry coordinates with various agencies, including the Ministry of Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services, to find a long-term solution.
Recognizing the urgent need for modernization, the Ministry announced that it had secured funding from the Government to replace all outdated lifts at CWMH. The new specialized lifts, which are designed to accommodate patients, staff, and medical equipment, are expected to meet strict infection control standards essential for hospital operations and are scheduled to be installed by February 2025.
The Ministry acknowledged the frustration caused by the lift’s failure and its impact on patients and staff. They urged everyone to remain patient as efforts are being made to enhance the hospital’s infrastructure and improve healthcare delivery in the region.
