CWM Hospital’s Lift Crisis: A Solution on the Horizon?

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has announced that replacement lifts for the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) are set to arrive next month from their contracted supplier. The Ministry addressed concerns regarding the malfunctioning patient lift, emphasizing their collaboration with service providers and relevant government agencies like the Ministry of Public Works, Transport, and Meteorological Services to resolve the issue.

The lift in question, located in the West Wing of CWMH, has been in service for over fifteen years and was originally sourced from the OTIS Elevator Company in New Zealand. Currently, engineers from OTIS are on-site at CWMH to repair the non-operational lift. This company is also responsible for ongoing maintenance of the lifts installed in the hospital.

Recognizing the need for modernized equipment, the Ministry initiated a procurement process earlier this year to replace the aging lifts at CWMH, having secured funding from the government. Lifts in hospitals are vital for transporting patients, medical staff, and equipment, and they must adhere to strict infection control standards. The construction of new lifts only commences once payment has been processed.

The breakdown of the lift has posed challenges to patient care at the hospital, leading to frustration among patients, their families, and healthcare staff. The Ministry encourages patience and understanding from families while they work diligently to enhance infrastructural needs across health facilities, aiming to improve overall healthcare services in the country.

This announcement brings hope for improved healthcare accessibility and better patient care in the near future. The commitment shown by the Ministry to address such infrastructure issues is a positive step towards ensuring a more efficient and supportive environment for patients and healthcare providers alike.
