CWM Hospital Lift Replacement on the Horizon: What You Need to Know

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has announced that replacement lifts for the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) are scheduled to arrive in the country next month, addressing ongoing issues related to the hospital’s non-functional patient lift. The Ministry recognizes the challenges posed by the aging equipment, specifically the lift in the West Wing, which has been in operation for over fifteen years.

Efforts to rectify the situation are in collaboration with the contracted supplier, OTIS Elevator Company of New Zealand, whose engineers are currently on-site at the hospital to repair the malfunctioning lift. The Ministry is also coordinating closely with other government bodies to ensure a comprehensive approach to the lift replacements.

In 2023, the Ministry identified the necessity to replace outdated lifts at CWMH, and with government funding, they have initiated the procurement and contractual processes to replace all old lifts in the facility. These specialized lifts are crucial for transporting patients, medical staff, and essential medical equipment, and must adhere to stringent infection prevention protocols.

The breakdown of the lift has understandably caused disruptions in patient care at the hospital, leading to frustration among patients, their families, and healthcare staff. In light of these challenges, the Ministry has appealed for patience and understanding as they work to enhance the infrastructure of healthcare facilities across the country.

In summary, while current challenges exist regarding patient lift functionality at CWMH, the proactive steps taken by the Ministry and its partners signal a commitment to improving healthcare services. These replacements not only aim to restore normalcy but also enhance the overall patient experience in the long term.
