The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has announced that replacement lifts for the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH) are scheduled to arrive next month from the contracted supplier. This news comes in response to concerns regarding the malfunctioning patient lift at the hospital.
Acknowledging the challenges posed by the non-functional lift, the Ministry is collaborating with service providers and governmental agencies, including the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services, to address the lift issues. The problematic lift, located in the West Wing of the hospital, has been in operation for over fifteen years.
The lift in question was procured from the OTIS Elevator Company in New Zealand, and engineers from the company are currently on-site at CWMH to restore the lift’s functionality. OTIS is also contracted to provide ongoing maintenance for the lifts they installed at the hospital.
In 2023, the Ministry recognized the urgent need to replace the aging lifts at CWMH. With funding from the government now in place, they have begun the procurement process to replace all outdated lifts in the facility.
Hospital lifts play a critical role in safely transporting patients, medical staff, and equipment, and must adhere to strict infection prevention and control standards. It’s important to note that these specialized machines are only manufactured once payment is completed.
The malfunctioning lift has caused interruptions in patient care, leading to frustration for patients, their families, and healthcare staff. In light of this, the Ministry is asking for patience from patients and their loved ones as they work diligently to improve the infrastructure of health facilities and enhance the delivery of healthcare services in the region.
This proactive approach by the Ministry underscores a commitment to patient care and safety, reflecting ongoing efforts to upgrade healthcare infrastructure and support systems. Looking ahead, the timely arrival of new lifts could significantly relieve current challenges and enhance operational efficiency within the hospital, ultimately fostering a better healthcare environment for everyone.
