Twenty customs officers were honored with World Customs Organization (WCO) Certificates of Merit in Suva yesterday as part of the International Customs Day 2025 celebrations. The officers, many of whom bring over 20 years of experience, were selected from the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) offices nationwide.
Each year, World Customs Day serves to recognize customs officials and agencies for their critical role in fostering efficient, safe, and secure global trade. This year’s event, themed “Customs: Delivering on its Commitment to Efficiency, Security and Prosperity,” was inaugurated by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka at the FRCS headquarters in Suva.
In his address, Prime Minister Rabuka lauded the significant contributions of customs officers, referring to them as the “gatekeepers of national borders.” He emphasized their essential role in facilitating smooth trade flows while ensuring national security by protecting against threats such as smuggling and terrorism. He acknowledged that the work these officials do is vital for Fiji’s economic prosperity.
“The challenges we face are complex, but so too are the opportunities,” remarked FRCS chief executive officer Udit Singh, as he thanked the customs officers for their unwavering commitment. He emphasized the importance of embracing innovation and strengthening partnerships to navigate the evolving challenges in customs administration.
This annual celebration not only honors the dedication of customs officers but also highlights the continuous journey towards enhancing efficiency, security, and prosperity in the trade sector.
In summary, both the recognition of customs officers and the insights shared during the event reflect a collective commitment to improving national security and facilitating trade in Fiji, offering a hopeful outlook for future collaborations and innovations in customs operations.
