Cultural Stigma Hinders Support for Struggling Fijian Teens

Teenagers facing a lack of acceptance and support from their families often struggle with severe mental health challenges, including thoughts of suicide, according to Marawa Kini, acting executive officer of Diabetes Fiji. One major obstacle for the organization is overcoming cultural beliefs, customs, and stigma that hinder young people from receiving necessary support.

Mr. Kini stated, “Diabetes Fiji is committed to collaborating with stakeholders, civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, government bodies, faith-based groups, and the media to tackle these issues.” He is appealing to the government to increase investment in public health programs run by Diabetes Fiji and has also reached out to regional and international organizations for support.

“If we do not address the challenges posed by diabetes, we will see more Fijian citizens needing hospitalization,” Mr. Kini emphasized. Diabetes Fiji had submitted a proposal to be part of the 2024-25 National Budget, but unfortunately, it did not receive any funding from the government.

“As a charitable organization, we are always open to receiving support, whether in kind or financial, from generous donors to continue our important work,” Mr. Kini added. He expressed gratitude towards parents who are committed to caring for their children and highlighted that Diabetes Fiji has programs aimed at training and advocating for parents.
