Some teenagers, who face challenges related to acceptance and support from their families, have contemplated suicide, according to Marawa Kini, the acting executive officer of Diabetes Fiji. A major challenge for the organization is tackling cultural beliefs, customs, and stigmas that hinder young individuals from receiving necessary support.
Mr. Kini stated, “Diabetes Fiji is dedicated to collaborating with stakeholders, civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, government entities, faith-based groups, and the media to address these concerns.” He emphasized the importance of government investment in public health initiatives organized by Diabetes Fiji and has called on regional and international organizations for support.
“If we do not address and support the issues related to diabetes, we will see an increase in Fijian citizens needing hospitalization,” Mr. Kini warned. Despite submitting a proposal to be included in the 2024-25 National Budget, Diabetes Fiji did not receive any government funding.
“As a charitable organization, we are always eager to accept any form of support, whether in-kind or financial, from generous donors to continue our mission,” Mr. Kini added. “Together, with the backing of our partners and the community, we are working towards a brighter and healthier future for our young champions and their families.” He also expressed gratitude to parents who are dedicated to caring for their children and mentioned that Diabetes Fiji offers programs to support parents through training and advocacy.
