Cultural Revival: Miss Hibiscus Festival Welcomes Unique Culinary Offerings

The Miss Hibiscus Festival made a lively comeback this year after a five-year hiatus, presenting an array of new marketing opportunities for local businesses.

Among the notable participants was GMJ’s Catering and Services, a family-run business that took advantage of the event to promote its mission of encouraging young entrepreneurs. At this festival, GMJ’s Catering distinguished itself by offering traditional, authentic cuisine, setting it apart from other selections available at Hibiscus Village on the Suva foreshore.

This unique approach highlighted their commitment to cultural heritage and the development of future business leaders. Fane Vereivalu, who co-owns the business, expressed that the Hibiscus Festival was an anticipated opportunity for many years.

With the assistance of family and friends, Ms. Vereivalu stated they aimed to create something unique for attendees, which led to their “Traditional Authentic Food” concept. “We wanted to provide something different and unique this year, as the Hibiscus Festival draws a diverse crowd,” Ms. Vereivalu explained.

They decided to involve their children, nephews, and nieces during the two-week holiday to teach them how to implement the lessons learned from their elders about earning money through traditional food. Through their family business and catering projects, she emphasized that their distinctive flavor and affordable prices set them apart. Originally from Nukunuku Lakeba in Lau, Ms. Vereivalu was resolute about participating in the festival this year.
