Tomasi Raiula, a 41-year-old rice farmer from Vunivutu in Labasa, embodies the transformative power of agriculture. Overcoming a challenging upbringing, Raiula made a pivotal decision three years ago to lease 35 acres of land for rice cultivation, which he describes as a “game changer” in his life. With support from the Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways, he obtained Boldgrain rice seeds, leading him to find success in this crop after experimenting with others like dalo, yaqona, and watermelon.
The simplicity of rice farming allows for quick harvests every four months, which Raiula sells to Fiji Rice Limited in Dreketi. His newfound success has led to significant investments, including a tractor and a personal vehicle that enhance his farming operations. Raiula’s journey emphasizes the importance of agriculture, as he now can support his family while building savings for their future.
Moreover, Raiula voices concerns over rising crime rates and social issues impacting youth in urban areas, urging them to connect with agriculture. He believes that farming can foster personal development by providing essential skills, instilling discipline, and creating economic opportunities, diverting young people from negative influences.
His perspective resonates with other ambitious young farmers, such as Petero Maciu from Cakaudrove, who at just 21 has carved out a successful path in agriculture. Maciu encourages the youth to utilize untapped land to create sustainable livelihoods, reinforcing that a commitment to farming can combat poverty.
The stories of Raiula and Maciu highlight a growing recognition among Fijians of agriculture’s potential for driving economic growth and community resilience. As more individuals take up farming, there is a hopeful outlook for overcoming societal challenges and fostering a self-sufficient future for Fijian communities.
