Crusaders climb to third as 2026 Super Rugby Pacific finals tighten hosting rights for the lucky loser

Super Rugby Pacific has confirmed its Qualifying Final fixtures after a dramatic final round that saw the Crusaders overtake the Blues to claim third spot on the ladder. The finals series opens on Friday 5 June with table-topping Hurricanes hosting the ACT Brumbies at Hnry Stadium in Wellington, a match that follows the Brumbies’ regular-season defeat to Moana Pasifika.

The first weekend of the 2026 Finals continues in Christchurch on Saturday afternoon when defending champions the Crusaders (3) meet the Blues (4) at One New Zealand Stadium. That evening the Chiefs (2) will conclude the Qualifying Finals with a Hamilton home clash against the Queensland Reds (5) at FMG Stadium Waikato. Kickoff times are 7.05pm NZST / 5.05pm AEST for the Hurricanes v Brumbies, 4.35pm NZST / 2.35pm AEST for Crusaders v Blues and 7.05pm NZST / 5.05pm AEST for Chiefs v Reds.

Under the six-team finals format introduced in recent seasons, the three winners from these Qualifying Finals will advance to the Semi-Finals, accompanied by the highest-ranked losing team — the so-called “lucky loser.” That structure preserves a pathway for a single higher-ranked defeat to still progress, keeping the final round of the regular season highly consequential for seeding and home advantage.

A key alteration for 2026, announced with this fixture confirmation, is a change to the status of the lucky loser: the team that advances as the highest-ranked loser will now be relegated to the lowest seeding for the Semi-Finals. Practically, that means the lucky loser will not have the right to host a Semi-Final — and, should it progress further, will also be ineligible to host the Grand Final. The tweak narrows the hosting privileges to outright winners and underscores the premium on securing victory in the Qualifying Finals.

The alteration is notable because home advantage has been a decisive factor in recent finals campaigns and was part of the broader overhaul that reshaped Super Rugby Pacific in 2025. Last year’s changes expanded the regular season and introduced the six-team finals berth system; this season’s amendment to the lucky-loser seeding further refines how teams will approach knockout fixtures and end-of-season strategy.

The late-season shuffle that produced the Crusaders’ rise to third added extra intrigue to the draw, setting up a rematch with rivals the Blues in Christchurch and ensuring each Qualifying Final carries high stakes for hosting rights and semifinal pathways. The Finals Series officially begins on Friday 5 June, with the three winners and the lucky loser set to be placed for the Semi-Finals under the updated seeding rules.
