Crumbling Schools: A Call to Restore Educational Values

A recent photograph revealing the deteriorating conditions of a well-known primary school on the outskirts of Suva has raised serious concerns about neglect and decay. The state of the school’s infrastructure is alarming, prompting reflections on the values we ascribe to educational institutions.

In the past, schools were viewed as sacred spaces for learning, deserving of respect from both students and faculty. Mornings were filled with cheerful greetings, laughter, and a sense of community among children as they arrived at school. Students were instilled with fundamental manners, such as expressing gratitude and maintaining cleanliness. They were taught to appreciate school materials, fostering a love for reading and learning that would have lasting benefits.

Mornings began with prayers and religious education, which offered students essential societal values that contributed to their character development. These teachings produced well-rounded individuals who became valuable community members.

However, a noticeable change has occurred concerning children’s rights and the values upheld in education. The traditional reverence for schools appears to be diminishing. Misbehavior and dishonesty seem to go unpunished, and the role of counselors and religious educators has been significantly diminished. Many teachers feel powerless and are seeking opportunities elsewhere, leading to a decline in the quality of teaching and learning.

School management has seen its authority curtailed, falling under the control of the Ministry of Education, which claims that they provide funding and salaries, thus dictating school governance. This top-down approach has prompted a worrying neglect of schools’ physical conditions, affecting the educational experiences of approximately 900 students.

Now is the time to reflect on whether we are prioritizing the right ideals for our children’s education. Combating issues like drug trafficking, teenage pregnancies, and a general loss of respect for authority requires urgent action. It is imperative to restore schools as temples of learning, free from the social experiments of the times. Addressing these challenges now is vital for nurturing a better environment for future generations.

In summary, there is a pressing need to rekindle the respect for educational values and the physical environments of schools. With communal effort, we can foster a brighter future for students, prioritizing both their education and well-being. It is crucial to act before further degradation occurs, ensuring that schools remain spaces of learning and growth.
