The Ministry of Education has recognized the challenges posed by inadequate school infrastructure on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). Education Minister Aseri Radrodro highlighted the concerning situation at Nabua Primary School, where students are exposed to unsafe conditions.
Minister Radrodro noted that the school building, which was left unfinished by previous management, presents several issues that must be addressed. “Initial information we received regarding Nabua indicates that the building, constructed under prior management, is incomplete,” he explained. The minister is currently working with the new management to find solutions to complete the structure. “If they require assistance from the government, they should follow the standard procedures through the Ministry of Education, and we will explore ways to help with the building’s completion.”
Reports indicate that many classrooms at Nabua Primary are in disrepair, featuring rusted roofs and missing window blades that pose safety risks for students. The Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Agni Deo Singh, was contacted regarding the OHS concerns and confirmed that a team visited the school on November 4. A report on their findings was expected to be released the following day, but the ministry has not yet responded to the OHS report despite repeated inquiries.
The situation at Nabua Primary School reflects a broader issue surrounding school infrastructure, emphasizing the urgent need for investment in safer educational environments. The ongoing dialogue between educational authorities and school management can pave the way for improvements, ensuring that students can learn in a secure environment. By ensuring a focus on OHS, the government is taking steps that can lead to better conditions for students in the future.
In summary, while the current state of the infrastructure is concerning, proactive measures are being discussed, which could lead to positive changes.
