Twenty-one-year-old Bulou Buteiove was honored as the Miss Vodafone Fiji Coral Coast Carnival 2024 last Saturday in Sigatoka Town. In her acceptance speech, she dedicated her victory to her mother, acknowledging her as a vital source of support and inspiration.
“Saying that I achieved this through God, I dedicate this crown to my mother, who is my pillar of strength, and to my family and the people of Nasama, Nadroga,” Ms. Buteiove stated. She emphasized the importance of love and generosity, values that she aims to promote through her new platform. A former student of Adi Cakobau School, Buteiove is currently a second-year primary education student at the National University of Fiji, with aspirations of becoming a teacher.
The event was graced by Viliame Gavoka, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation. He highlighted the carnival’s theme, “Breaking the Waves of Addiction,” noting its relevance and significance. Gavoka likened addiction to the relentless waves of the ocean, which can undermine personal and community foundations. He emphasized the importance of a strong, united community in combating this issue.
“Breaking the waves of addiction requires a collective response; a community anchored in resilience and driven by compassion. Together, we can ensure that the tides of addiction recede, leaving behind a shore of hope and renewal,” he stated. Furthermore, Gavoka praised the Coral Coast as an essential part of Fiji’s tourism scene, emphasizing its beauty and the unique experiences it offers to visitors.
In summary, this event not only celebrated the achievements of a young woman but also raised awareness about the critical issue of addiction, reinforcing the need for community solidarity and resilience. The recognition of such themes within celebratory contexts provides a hopeful perspective, showing that beauty contests can extend beyond glamour to address significant social issues.
