Crowning Change: Miss Nasinu Contestant Fights Domestic Violence

Seven contestants are set to vie for the title of Miss Nasinu Carnival 2024 over the next two weeks. Among the competitors is Vinaina Marawa, who aims to raise awareness about domestic violence in homes and communities.

Ms. Marawa is dedicated to utilizing the carnival week to address this critical issue. Fiji continues to grapple with alarmingly high rates of violence against women, with statistics indicating that two-thirds of women in the country experience physical or sexual violence from a partner during their lifetime. Additionally, 60 percent of women encounter distressing situations at home due to a lack of support and ongoing abuse.

Representing the Nasinu Town Council, Ms. Marawa is not new to the beauty pageant scene. At just 18 years old, she previously participated in the Hibiscus Festival Teen category. She perceives her participation in events like the Nasinu Carnival as a chance to serve her community with dignity.

“It’s not about the clothes or looks; it’s about representing our community,” Ms. Marawa stated. “During this carnival, my focus will be on advocacy and driving change at the national level, and I am eager to use my voice for this cause.”

Believing that change starts at home, Ms. Marawa reflects on her upbringing as the eldest of eight siblings raised by a single mother, recognizing the considerable responsibilities she undertook. Despite the challenges of balancing household chores and studies, her mother’s steadfast support made her journey fulfilling.

At this year’s Nasinu Carnival, the Kadavu native plans to leverage the platform to promote advocacy and strive for meaningful change.
