Melania Tora, crowned Miss Hibiscus 2024, remained undeterred by the week’s excitement as she attended church to express her gratitude to God for her win. The 24-year-old highlighted the importance of thanksgiving and worship, stating that it was essential for her.
Ms. Tora plans to celebrate her achievement with her family from Sabeto and has maternal roots in Vanuabalavu, Lau. Following a service at the Fiji Connect event at the USP Laucala Campus, she shared her spiritual journey. “Being with Jesus is so wonderful. I may not be perfect, but I have my own story,” she remarked.
She emphasized that her sense of victory transcends the crown, attributing her success to her faith. “Having the support of my vanua is something I never knew I needed, but it’s truly appreciated,” she noted. Ms. Tora expressed gratitude for the messages of encouragement she received and anticipates a celebratory gathering with her community.
In her role as Miss Hibiscus, she aims to advocate for various groups, including cancer survivors, sex workers, and juveniles. “I have felt prepared for this platform through my community work over the past two years, and I hope to bring attention to real, sustainable changes,” she explained.
Ms. Tora expressed her appreciation for the other contestants and the relationships formed throughout the competition, noting the emotional rollercoaster the experience brought but emphasizing the joy involved.
Her advice to future contestants is clear: “If you’re thinking of competing next year, go for it. No matter your background, if you believe you can make a difference, take that leap. It will be a unique and fulfilling experience.”
