Critical Water Levels Signal Supply Disruptions in Suva

Residents of Suva have been warned to prepare for irregular water supply. The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) reported that five out of six raw water sources feeding the Tamavua Treatment Plant are nearing critical levels due to the upcoming dry season.

Samuela Rokolaveusa, WAF’s regional manager for operations, indicated that the Savura Intake and Headwork Three have reached critical status, while Headwork One, Headwork Two, and the Waimanu Pump Station are approaching similar levels. The only major raw water source functioning normally is the cascade source.

Rokolaveusa stated that areas receiving supply from the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant System might face intermittent disruptions, as operations depend on the levels of treated water produced. He noted that catchments have seen minimal rainfall recently, leading to decreased treated water production and lowered reservoir levels.

Additionally, the weather outlook for the coming three months appears unfavorable, with few signs of wet conditions expected across most of Fiji. Rokolaveusa emphasized that reduced raw water sources directly affect water production, further diminishing reservoir levels and delaying the restoration of continuous water supply to elevated areas within the Tamavua system.

He reassured the public that WAF’s hydrology team is closely monitoring the situation at the main raw water sites. WAF has advised customers to conserve water and store enough to last their households for at least two days.
