Critical Voices: Are Fiji’s Appointments Undermining Integrity?

Independent MP Jone Usamate has criticized the government’s recent decisions and appointments, suggesting they could have been handled more effectively. In a discussion on The Lens@177, Usamate expressed his dissatisfaction with certain actions taken by the government.

He emphasized the importance of institutional integrity and the necessity of appointing qualified individuals to key positions. “We’ve seen that failed candidates have been placed in various roles, and I question whether that serves the best interests of our country,” he stated.

According to Usamate, appointing individuals who are ill-suited for their roles can lead to poor decision-making and ineffective processes. While he declined to name specific individuals inappropriately appointed, he indicated he would prefer to address this in Parliament.

He also commented on the government’s previous intentions regarding the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA), suggesting that their campaign rhetoric about restructuring had softened once they assumed office. “They’ve acknowledged the importance of the FRA but have also established the Public Works Department, indicating a reassessment of their earlier stance,” he noted.

Usamate stressed that having the right structures and personnel results in positive outcomes, whereas the reverse leads to detrimental processes. Additionally, he highlighted a protocol breach concerning the lack of an invitation for the Opposition to the traditional welcoming ceremony for the Indian President’s visit, viewing this as indicative of broader issues stemming from poor appointments.
