Critical Talks Ahead for University of the South Pacific

Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad has announced that a meeting is scheduled for next week to address the ongoing challenges facing the University of the South Pacific (USP).

The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that the government will not intervene in the university’s operations. “Next week we will meet to discuss how we can resolve, if there are any issues,” he stated, adding that the government will not disrupt the university’s governance or management decisions.

Government representatives sit on the USP Council, and any concerns regarding the university will be raised by those members during council meetings.

In related news, Maritino Nemani, the permanent secretary for the Ministry of Employment, confirmed this week that the ministry is applying due process in mediating between the USP management and staff unions.
