Critical Discussions Emerge on Fiji’s Constitution: What Lies Ahead?

Bula

Dialogue has begun on potential constitutional reform in the country.

On Thursday, Australian National University (ANU) constitutional law expert Professor Anthony Regan was in Nasinu for the Fiji National University (FNU) Vice Chancellor’s Leadership Seminar. He spoke on the topic “Constitutional Change in Fiji: Looking to the Future.”

Professor Regan urged inclusive participation and consultation with the broader community before any constitution-making process.

Opposition Leader Inia Seruiratu stated that they would support any action on the Constitution, provided it was in the nation’s best interest.

Professor Regan emphasized the need to involve all segments of society in any constitutional reform process. He noted that while there were positive features in the 2013 Constitution, such as moving away from communal voting, there were also significant issues, including a concentration of power in the executive, which he described as “most unusual” in a Westminster-type system.

The discussion for constitutional reform gains momentum with calls for a democratic review process that reflects the will of the people and not just those in power. Attorney-General Graham Leung mentioned that Professor Regan was invited to initiate serious dialogue on the way forward if there was consensus on the need for change. This process should involve the views and contributions of all people, signifying a shift towards a more inclusive and representative approach to revising the legal document.

Additionally, a Canadian national was apprehended in Australia carrying $19 million worth of methamphetamine, which Australian authorities believe traveled through Fiji from Canada. Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua highlighted the incident as an example of the need to strengthen Fiji’s border controls.
