Crisis on the Streets: Fiji’s iTaukei Dwellers in Urgent Need

The Catholic Church of Fiji is alarmed by the fact that a significant number of street dwellers in Suva are from the iTaukei community. As part of their daily mission, the church provides food packs to these individuals.

Ben Salacakau, a representative of the church, expressed concerns about the health implications stemming from the sharp rise in the street dwelling population. He indicated that a strategic plan will be needed to tackle this pressing issue.

Salacakau emphasized that the growing number of iTaukei among the homeless calls for a unified effort from families and local communities. He stated, “This has become a serious problem, impacting not just us but also the families involved and their responses to this situation.”

Street dwellers are a significant concern for local communities, including various organizations and churches. Salacakau noted that churches feel a profound responsibility to assist those in need by providing immediate aid such as food and shelter, along with long-term support like counseling and job training.

He highlighted the church’s initiatives, such as food and nutrition programs, regular food distributions, and soup kitchens, which aim to ensure that individuals on the streets have access to nutritious meals. Additionally, he pointed out the necessity of offering counseling services to address mental health issues and substance abuse that may contribute to homelessness.

Street dwellers face numerous challenges, including vulnerability to violence and exploitation, making it vital to ensure their safety and well-being. The lack of adequate infrastructure for shelters and support services further complicates the situation.

Salacakau addressed the social stigma and discrimination faced by street dwellers, which often hinders their ability to access services and reintegrate into society. He warned that this stigma can also reduce the community’s willingness to support relevant initiatives.

He urged for greater advocacy and awareness concerning the challenges faced by street dwellers, promoting better policies and support mechanisms at both local and national levels.
