A chief from Bua has issued a warning about the potential rapid loss of iTaukei cultures and traditions. Tui Bua Ratu Makutu Nagagavoka emphasized that without immediate intervention, the customs and traditions of the iTaukei people could fade away.

He remarked, “This disconnection threatens not only our traditions but also the essence of our identity as iTaukei people.” Ratu Makutu highlighted that increasing modernization has contributed to a decline in the practice of traditional rituals and the upkeep of cultural values.

He expressed concern about the significant changes occurring, stating that some customs and traditions are no longer observed, a trend that can be seen in various villages. He stressed the importance of preserving essential cultural and traditional assets, such as fishing grounds and land, which are critical for cultural practices and community unity, as well as for economic reasons.

Ratu Makutu urged that everyone has a part to play in maintaining these cultures and traditions.
