Criminal Fires Threaten Fiji’s Sugarcane Future

The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) has issued a strong warning regarding a recent spike in intentional sugarcane field fires, labeling these actions as both reckless and criminal. Dr. Vinesh Kumar, the chief executive officer of SRIF, emphasized the severe impact these fires have on farmers and the wider sugarcane industry.

Dr. Kumar stressed that setting sugarcane fields ablaze is not only immoral but also constitutes a criminal offense that can carry serious penalties. He noted that SRIF has experienced significant losses in key research data because of these incidents, which are typically collected over an extended period and are vital for advancing the sugarcane sector based on evidence.

He highlighted that a single act of arson could obliterate valuable research instantly, hindering progress and impacting the industry’s future adversely. Dr. Kumar urged the public to recognize the seriousness of the situation, explaining that arson threatens the financial stability of farmers and the essential scientific research that supports the industry’s sustainability and growth.

The SRIF is calling on the community to remain alert and report any suspicious behaviors to the authorities. He concluded by saying, “By working together, we can protect our sugarcane fields, preserve vital research, and ensure the continued prosperity of our industry.”
