Criminal Convictions Could Halt Seasonal Workers’ Dreams Abroad

Fiji’s Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations, Agni Deo Singh, has issued a firm warning to seasonal workers about the potential consequences of criminal convictions on their overseas employment contracts. This cautionary message comes in light of a recent incident involving three seasonal workers from Tavea Island, Bua, who faced charges for being drunk and disorderly on a vessel during Christmas Day. Witnesses reported feeling threatened by their disruptive behavior, highlighting the risks such actions pose not only to others but also to the workers’ professional future.

Minister Singh emphasized that under the work policies established by both New Zealand and Australia, any criminal conviction results in the immediate termination of existing overseas employment contracts and disqualifies individuals from future job applications, regardless of the severity of the offense. “Even if these seasonal workers reapply, they will not be allowed to work abroad,” he stated, underscoring the importance of maintaining a clean legal record.

He further encouraged all seasonal workers and applicants to be transparent regarding any past convictions, noting that even minor offenses, such as traffic violations or disorderly conduct, could severely hinder their job prospects. As part of addressing these concerns, the Minister is currently collaborating with the Ministry of Justice and the High Commissioners of both countries to manage such incidents effectively.
