Creating Safe Spaces: The Key to Honest Reconciliation

Labasa businesswoman Amelia Simmons emphasizes the necessity of creating a neutral and comfortable environment for individuals to safely share their stories during the reconciliation process.

Speaking to the steering committee of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Ms. Simmons noted that the process has sparked a rise in nationalism and has shifted the focus towards ethnic issues. She expressed concern about the growing tendency for people to think in terms of division.

To ensure the success of the commission, she advocated for a safe space where individuals can freely express themselves. “Involving civil societies and other stakeholders on the ground is crucial,” she stated, highlighting the need for confidentiality to foster honesty among participants.

Ms. Simmons remarked that people often discuss sensitive topics informally and that sharing these experiences can be challenging in traditional settings. She stressed the importance of a neutral atmosphere where individuals feel comfortable sharing their stories without fear.

In response, the chairperson of the steering committee, Sashi Kiran, assured that the commission would provide a safe space that is inclusive for all ethnicities.
