Crafting Success: A Local Woman’s Journey with Wananavu Earrings

A local woman is successfully running her handmade business despite challenges, showcasing the importance of creativity and resilience in entrepreneurship. Iowana Salusalu, who operates a business called Wananavu Earrings from Qelekuro, Tailevu, emphasizes the value of handcrafting products.

For the last 20 years, Salusalu has been working in various hotels, including Shangri-La, but decided to venture into her own business as the impact of COVID-19 lingered. She started her business in 2019 and has steadily grown, emphasizing the significance of local craftsmanship and market presence.

Salusalu focuses on selling earrings made from local materials, including masi (tapa cloth) and traditional designs. Today, she manages her business alongside her daughter and recognizes the positive response from the community, which appreciates the beauty and uniqueness of her offerings.

She mentioned the high demand for her products, with significant sales transactions happening regularly. “If we are making $2 a day, that accumulates to a substantial amount within a week,” she noted, expressing gratitude for the support received from customers, especially local women who have shown interest in learning about small business opportunities.

Salusalu’s products range in price from $2 to $55, covering various handmade items such as earrings, necklaces, and other crafts. On successful days, she can earn between $200 to $400, demonstrating the potential profitability of her small business.

She encourages local residents to continuously strive for creativity and growth, urging them not to give up on their ambitions. The community’s support has been crucial in her journey, reinforcing the idea that dedication and hard work can lead to significant achievements.
