Cracking Down on Road Safety: Shocking Statistics Revealed

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has taken action against numerous drivers from August 1, 2023, to June 1, 2024, counselling 58 drivers, issuing 1,206 warning letters, suspending 13 drivers’ licences, and cancelling 112 licences.

Despite a reduction in road fatalities by July 11, 2024, with 29 deaths compared to 51 during the same period last year, LTA CEO Irimaia Rokosawa highlighted ongoing concerns regarding the causes of road accidents. Speeding remains the leading cause of accidents and fatalities, followed by drink driving and driver fatigue. Additionally, Mr. Rokosawa noted significant concern over incidents involving pedestrians at fault and hit-and-run cases.

“The LTA is dedicated to tackling these issues through strict enforcement, comprehensive monitoring, and ongoing road safety awareness campaigns,” said Mr. Rokosawa.

In July, the Authority, in collaboration with the Fiji Police Force, initiated a special awareness operation focusing on the dangers of jaywalking and promoting responsible behavior among pedestrians.
