Cracking Down: LTA Takes Tough Stance on Road Safety

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has taken action against several drivers from August 1, 2023, to June 1, 2024. During this period, LTA counselled 58 drivers, issued 1,206 warning letters, suspended 13 drivers’ licenses, and cancelled 112 licenses.

Despite a decline in road fatalities as of July 11, 2024, with 29 deaths compared to 51 in the same period last year, LTA CEO Irimaia Rokosawa highlighted ongoing concerns regarding the causes of road accidents. Rokosawa emphasized that speeding remains the leading cause of accidents and fatalities, followed by drink driving and driver fatigue.

Additional concerns include incidents involving pedestrians at fault and hit-and-run cases, which are “areas of significant concern,” according to Rokosawa.

“The LTA is committed to addressing these issues through stringent enforcement, comprehensive monitoring, and ongoing road safety awareness campaigns,” he stated.

In July, the LTA and the Fiji Police Force initiated a special awareness operation to highlight the dangers of jaywalking and promote responsible behavior among pedestrians.
